Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School
- The mission of BVT is:
To provide, in a safe learning environment, integrated academic and vocational technical skills, empowering each student to archive world-class educational excellence, diverse career opportunities, and individual success in an ever-changing global society.
- BVT serves 13 towns: Bellingham, Blackstone, Douglas, Grafton, Hopedale, Mendon, Milford, Millbury, Millville, Northbridge, Sutton, Upton, and Uxbridge.
- BVT has a student population of approximately 1200 students, with 16 distinctive vocational technical programs and a structured academic core program.
FIRST Robotics ("For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology")
- The mission of FIRST is:
Our mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
- FIRST was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology.
- Based in Manchester, NH, the 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.
Team 61, The Shifters
- Team 61 and BVT have been involved in the FIRST Robotics Competition since 1995.
- Since 1995, our team has seen FIRST grow to over 1800 teams in 12 Countries.
- In 2008, the team reorganized and brought in additional help from more teachers, parents, and professionals.
- The Shifters are truly a team for the entire school to get behind:
- Drafting students transfer detailed engineering drawings to the Manufacturing Technology students to fabricate robot parts
- Electronics wires up the robot
- Information Technology programs the robot
- Graphics Communication students create team shirts and buttons.
- Carpentry helps with creating playing field elements, the robot shipping crate, and cabinets for the pit at competition events.
- Plumbing contributes parts for our test feild
- Auto Body paints and finishes parts of the robot
- Culinary makes us good brain food for the meetings
- Working alongside professionals in industry, the students gain valuable skill sets that will prepare them for a career in tomorrow's fast-paced work force.
- 2009 was a very successful season, with the team making the quarter finals at the Connecticut Regional, winning the Boston Regional, and coming in 16th at the Championship Archimedes field
